La Salle falls to UDel

The University of Delaware defeated La Salle last Wednesday, September 23, 10-6. Delaware rode to victory on the back of an outstanding defensive performance by their starting goaltender, and a finely tuned fast break offense. 6 of Delaware's 10 goals came as a result of fast breaks. Of the other 4, 3 were scored on man-up advantages, with the other being scored due to a tactical error by La Salle keeper Kyle Manning. The goal, Delaware's first of the game, came when Manning came too far off his line to attack a 1-man breakaway. He stopped the breakaway, fouling the player, but was unable to return to his net in time to stop the shot from the restart.

La Salle traveled to Delaware, with only 9 of it's 18 rostered players. The were missing starters Chris Cefalo and Sean McMichael as well as Grant Chin, hero of the previous game against F&M. Several other players also did not make the trip.

La Salle played a patchwork starting line-up, Regular keeper Manning was in net, with Ben Fallon, Katie Hill, Theresa Glinski, Antoinette High and Rory McDonald in the field. Rich Crean and Zak Bearint also made the trip and started as substitutes. La Salle's play was haphazard, playing well for brief spurts while sinking into confusion for large portions of the game. The game was tied 2-2 after the first quarter, but UDel pulled away in the second, leading 6-2 at half. La Salle threatened early in the third, scoring two quick goals to pull to 6-4, but UDel recovered and went on to win 10-6.

#4 Ben Fallon scored all 6 goals for La Salle on 6 for 12 shooting. Katie Hill, Theresa Glinski, Antoinette High and Mike Ellerson also tried their luck at goal, but were turned away by the UDel keeper, who was on top form in the game. Rich Crean making his La Salle debut, did not score, but did have a beautiful steal in the 4th quarter. Manning spent much of the game fending off fast breaks, ending with 14 saves, and 10 goals allowed.

La Salle's next game is October 8th, home vs Lehigh University. In the meantime, there will be scrimmages against Drexel and UDel.
